Workplace EV charger installation services from MCI Electrical

Workplace EV charger installation in Southampton

Planning commercial workplace EV charger installation in Southampton? MCI Electrical assesses electrical capacity, parking positions and cable routes for offices, depots and industrial premises.

I have worked on commercial premises across Eastleigh and Southampton since 2009. I quote the job, do the work and sign it off myself, so you always deal with the person who knows your building.

How much does a workplace EV charger cost in Southampton

A workplace charge point that can use grant support is priced from £1,250. That figure covers a single unit on a board that already has a suitable spare way, a short protected run to the bay, isolation, testing and the certificate. Longer runs across a dock yard, a new board, a three phase supply, or several bays are priced after the intake has been seen.

  • The figure is a starting price rather than a fixed sum, and your bay and your board are priced before work begins.
  • Grant paperwork sits between you and the scheme; the price here covers the electrical work, the circuit and the certificate.
  • Fixed wire testing is priced on the number of boards and circuits, not by the hour.
  • Emergency lighting is priced per light, and the three hour test is priced separately.
  • Repairs are priced item by item off the report, so you choose what to do and when.
  • Work outside your trading hours costs a different rate, and I tell you what it is before I set off.
  • Quotes are free, rescheduling is free, and there is no callout fee.

Workplace EV charger installation in Southampton

  • We fit workplace vehicle charge points for firms on the docks, the trading estates and the city offices around Southampton.
  • Vans, cars and small plant now plug in between sailings, so the charger is sized to the board already feeding the unit.
  • Millbrook, First Avenue, Nursling and Mauretania Road have yards where staff park hard against the elevation.
  • Blocks near Above Bar share one intake with the floors above, so the spare capacity gets measured before anything is quoted.

Chargers on Southampton docks and trading estates

  • Salt air, dusty yards and old city fabric change how a charge point is fixed and how long its supply will last.
  • A feed on rusty tray or a tired gland will not see out a winter on the quay, so the metalwork is judged first.
  • Runs are kept short, cable is protected where forklifts and trailers pass, and the unit is mounted clear of a reversing van.
  • Older boards and submains were never drawn for vehicle charging, so spare capacity and bonding get measured before a price.

What happens on the day

We attend in person, and the visit runs from the parking bay and the board through to a working charge point and its paperwork.

  1. 01

    Arrival and supply check

We meet you at the unit, look at the bay the vehicles actually use, and open the board that will feed the charge point. Isolation, earthing, spare ways and the cable run are all confirmed before a single hole is cut. On dock units the glands and tray get inspected in the salt air as well, because tying a new run to metalwork that is already going is a repair booked for next winter.

  2. 02

    Installing the circuit

The board is isolated, a dedicated way is added or used, the cable is run out to the bay you chose, and the unit is fixed to the wall or a post. Isolation goes in at the charge point itself and the circuit is marked on the chart. The run is kept away from refrigeration, escape lighting and anything else the building cannot afford to lose to a trip on a wet morning.

  3. 03

    Test, certificate and handover

The circuit is tested, the charge point is proved to start a charge on a vehicle or a suitable load where one is available, and the certificate is completed. You get the results, the circuit identity written on the board chart, and a walk through of how to isolate it, so a night supervisor can switch the charge point off without taking the rest of the unit down with it.

Other electrical work with a workplace charger

A tight board often needs replacing first, three phase power helps where the intake will not take the load, depot charging suits several bays, and fault tracing comes in when the supply already trips.

Why firms on the docks book MCI Electrical

These estates are already worked for testing and repairs, so a charge point goes onto a supply that has been seen rather than guessed at from a photograph.

Workplace EV charger questions in Southampton

These are the questions we get on the docks, the estates and in the city offices.

How much is a workplace EV charger in Southampton?+

One unit that can use grant support is priced from £1,250, on a board that already has a suitable way with a short run to the bay. The figure is confirmed in writing once the board and the bay have both been seen, because a long run across a yard or a board with nothing spare turns it into a different job with a different price.

David McInnes

Do you work on Western Docks and the port estate?+

Yes, both for charge points and for the rest of the commercial work on those sites. Salt and dust on containment and glands are allowed for when the cable run and the fittings are chosen, which is why a run that looks obvious on the drawing sometimes gets moved. Metalwork already failing does not get used as an anchor for something new.

David McInnes

Can you fit a charger on Millbrook Trading Estate or Nursling?+

Yes, those estates are regular ground. Parking there is usually tight against the unit, so the charge point is positioned where a van can use it without blocking the roller door or catching the case on a trailer. Where cable has to cross ground that forklifts use, it is protected properly rather than clipped along a wall at knee height.

What if the city centre building shares one incoming supply?+

Mixed use blocks near Above Bar and converted Victorian buildings often share the intake between a shop and the offices above. That supply is measured before anything is promised. Where there is no capacity spare, a board change gets quoted, or you get told plainly that the charge point cannot go on that intake at all. Neither answer is left until the day of the install.

Will the charger trip the cold store?+

Not if that board can be avoided, and on food logistics and cold store sites it usually can. The charge point is kept on its own way so a residual current trip on a wet yard cannot take refrigeration down with it. Where the only spare way sits on the essential board, a separate way or a small additional board is priced instead of forcing the charge point onto it.

Do you need three phase for a workplace charger?+

Not always. A single unit on a healthy single phase board is often enough for staff parking. Several bays, or a yard of vans wanting a decent charge overnight, usually push the demand past what the existing intake can carry, and then three phase power is priced from £1,400. The demand is worked out from how the vehicles are actually used, not from the largest unit available.

Do you answer the phone out of hours?+

Calls are taken at any time. Charge point installations are booked into opening hours, because the board has to come off and someone on site needs to know it is happening. A live fault after close is a separate visit at £105 an hour, and that is to get the building safe rather than to carry on with an installation in the dark.

Do you sell a maintenance plan with the charger?+

No, there is no plan and nothing to sign. After handover you book a repair, a retest or another bay as and when you need one, and it is the company that fitted the original. That suits marine and logistics sites in particular, where the retest cycle is shorter and the circuit needs to be easy to find on the chart.
