Most commercial premises require a quick monthly function test alongside an annual full duration test, usually running for three hours. The annual test confirms that all batteries sustain escape illumination for the entire period required by British standards.
What is the difference between a function check and a duration test?
A function check simulates brief mains failure to verify that each lamp illuminates correctly from battery power. A full duration test disconnects supply for the full specified time to prove the internal batteries maintain acceptable light levels without exhausting.
What happens if an emergency light fails during the test?
Failed units are marked on the test schedule alongside notes on whether the lamp, battery pack or fitting failed. The certificate records the fault, and a separate written repair quote is provided item by item so you can choose when to replace them.
Can emergency lighting tests be carried out outside normal working hours?
Yes. Testing can be arranged outside trading hours to avoid interrupting staff, tenants or customers while mains lighting circuits are isolated. Out-of-hours rates are confirmed in writing before setting off.
